🏰 Sedan Castle (France)
Proudly perched on a rocky promontory along the Meuse River, Sedan Castle boasts six centuries of history.
In 1424, Evrard III de La Marck purchased the lordship of Sedan from his brother-in-law, Guillaume de Braquemont, and began constructing the first castle, which originally included a priory. Over time, his descendants—eight princes and a princess—expanded it into what is now known as “The Giant of Sedan”, the largest fortified castle in Europe, covering an area of 35,000 square meters.
Today, Sedan Castle is classified as a historical monument, and visitors can explore its rich history and impressive architecture on a guided tour.
🏰 Bouillon Castle (Belgium)
The most iconic landmark in Bouillon is its majestic Château de Bouillon.
The earliest mention of the castle dates back to 988 CE, though some believe a fortress existed here during the Gallo-Roman era. It was owned by the House of Ardennes until 1096, when Godfrey of Bouillon sold it to the Prince-Bishop of Liège to finance his participation in the First Crusade. Godfrey later died in Jerusalem after securing victory in the Crusade.
The castle changed hands multiple times—including under Napoleon Bonaparte—before finally becoming part of Belgium following the Belgian Revolution. Over the centuries, the fortress has been renovated and expanded, standing today as a remarkable testament to medieval military architecture.
🏰 Vianden Castle (Luxembourg)
Built between the 11th and 14th centuries on the foundations of a Roman castellum and a Carolingian refuge, Vianden Castle is one of the largest and most beautiful feudal residences of the Romanesque and Gothic periods in Europe.
Since 1977, the castle has been meticulously restored, preserving its historical authenticity. Today, it is recognized as a monument of European significance and ranks among the 21 most beautiful castles in the world.
