Frankfurt, often dubbed the smallest metropolis in the world, is a dynamic blend of financial power, European heritage, and a bustling traffic hub. Known for its state-of-the-art businesses, skyscrapers, and Europe’s third-largest airport, Frankfurt is much more than just banks and stock exchanges.
Beyond its financial prowess, the city on the Main offers a rich tapestry of cultural and historical attractions. Paulskirche (Paul’s Cathedral), the legacy of Goethe, and the renowned Book Fair are just the beginning. Frankfurt’s skyline is iconic, and its wealth of museums is unparalleled. The Städel Museum, at the heart of Frankfurt’s museum mile, stands out as one of Germany’s premier art institutions, showcasing masterpieces from nine centuries of European art. The city also hosts the German Film Museum, the Museum of Architecture, and the Schirn Kunsthalle art gallery, among around 60 other diverse institutions.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Frankfurt’s most famous son, is a pervasive presence. Visitors can follow in his footsteps throughout the city, including a visit to the Goethe House. A single glance from one of the Main bridges captures both the civic splendor of the Römerberg and the impressive skyline of modern high-rises.
Though much of the old city was destroyed during World War II, modern reconstruction has given Frankfurt a unique blend of old and new. The city, once the administrative headquarters for American forces post-war and the tri-zone administrative center, has risen to be a key player in global finance.
