LVR Archaeological Park Xanten – Step Back into Roman History

Located on the site of the ancient Roman city of Colonia Ulpia Traiana, the LVR Archaeological Park Xanten is Germany’s largest open-air archaeological museum, offering an immersive journey into antiquity.

At its peak, over 10,000 people lived, worked, and walked the streets of Colonia Ulpia Traiana. Today, the traces they left behind tell the story of a city’s rise, prosperity, and decline. During a guided tour, you’ll uncover the everyday lives of its inhabitants, from soldiers and merchants to craftsmen and families.

Since 2021, this remarkable site has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the “Frontiers of the Roman Empire – Lower Germanic Limes”. Due to its strategic location near the large legionary camp Vetera Castraand along the Rhine border, Colonia Ulpia Traiana played a key role in both military and civilian life.

• The Limes road, dating back to the 1st century, once ran through the heart of the city.

• Its expanding harbor supplied Roman military outposts along the Rhine for centuries.

• After its destruction around 275 AD, a massive Roman fortress was built on the ruins, becoming a vital stronghold in the 4th-century border defenses.

Siegfried’s Spectacle – A Medieval Festival in Honor of the Dragon Slayer

Once again, the Middle Ages come alive in Xanten! The legendary Siegfried’s Spectacle transforms the Nordwall into a bustling medieval village filled with inns, merchant stalls, and artisan workshops.
Wander through jewelry and clothing stalls, sip on medieval-inspired drinks, and enjoy freshly prepared food as the aromas of the Middle Ages fill the air.

• Thrilling Knight Tournaments – Twice a day, the renowned Kaiser & Kaiser equestrian stunt team brings the legend of Siegfried von Xanten to life with an action-packed knight show.

• The Battle for the Elven Treasure – At Klever Tor, the mighty dragon Fangdorn fiercely defends its enchanted hoard from a daring thief.
