Metz

Metz is a charming provincial city in the Lorraine region, situated on the east side of the Moselle River. Pronounced “Mess,” Metz has earned the prestigious title of “Ville d’Art et d’Histoire” (City of Art and History).

Today, visitors to this peaceful city might find it hard to believe how turbulent its history has been over the centuries, as it was continually annexed by France and Germany. With a rich history spanning 3,000 years, Metz has been a Celtic oppidum, an important Roman city, and one of the oldest republics in Europe. The city is home to several remarkable buildings, including the Gothic Saint-Etienne Cathedral, which boasts the largest expanse of stained-glass windows in the world, and the Basilica of Saint-Pierre-aux-Nonnains, the oldest church in France. Other notable landmarks include the Imperial Station Palace, which once housed the apartment of the German Kaiser, and the city’s Opera House, the oldest functioning opera house in France.

As a historic garrison town, Metz has been shaped by military architecture throughout its history. One of the city’s most recognizable landmarks is the Germans’ Gate (French: Porte des Allemands), a medieval bridge castle from the 13th century that has been transformed into a convention and exhibition center.

Luxembourg

Luxembourg is a founding member of the European Union, OECD, the United Nations, NATO, and the Benelux. Luxembourg City, in particular, is a picturesque location perfect for photographs. Perched atop a promontory and surrounded on three sides by cliffs, the city was once Europe’s most coveted fortress, and it still bears many visually striking remnants of its past.

Luxembourg is a representative democracy led by a constitutional monarch, Grand Duke Henri, making it the world’s only remaining sovereign grand duchy. While exploring the city, visitors can admire sights such as the 17th-century Notre Dame Cathedral and the Old Quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city is famous for its centuries-old fortifications and the narrow lanes and ancient walls that earned it the nickname “Gibraltar of the North.” The Grand Ducal Palace, one of the prettiest buildings in the city, is another must-see. Art enthusiasts should not miss the National Museum of Art and History.

A visit to Luxembourg City is incomplete without heading to the Bock Cliff to find the entrance to the Casemates du Bock. Dating back to 1644, the Casemates form a 21-kilometer network of underground tunnels carved from solid rock. These tunnels once sheltered soldiers, horses, and equipment, and even housed kitchens, bakeries, and slaughterhouses.
