Carnival the Swiss Way

The Swiss carnival, called Fasnacht, is a major cultural event celebrated across the country. Just as Rio is known for samba, Swiss cities proudly uphold their own Fasnacht traditions—and Lucerne hosts one of the most lively and loudest carnivals of all.

For several days in late winter, Lucerne bursts into life. The streets overflow with people wearing spectacular, creative masks while playing loud, energetic music on trumpets, horns, and drums. This is Lozärner Fasnacht, the Swiss version of carnival.

The festival preserves traditions dating back to the 15th century, rooted in pre-Lenten customs. Carnival served as the last celebration before the 40 days of Lent—when meat, alcohol, and festivities were prohibited—so people celebrated with full enthusiasm. The custom also symbolized “scaring winter away” to welcome spring.

Making fun of authorities during Fasnacht is a centuries-old tradition. Lucerne residents take special pride in their elaborate handmade masks, called Grende. Local groups spend an incredible amount of time and craftsmanship creating these works of art—something you’ll clearly see when you experience the celebration in person.
