The crown jewel of Bouillon’s historic sites is undoubtedly the majestic Château de Bouillon.
The earliest known mention of Château de Bouillon dates back to 988 CE, though it’s believed that a fortress may have existed on this site since the Gallo-Roman era. Originally owned by the Dukes of the House of Ardennes, the castle was sold in 1096 by Godfrey V to the Prince-Bishop to fund the First Crusade. Godfrey V later died in Jerusalem after achieving victory in the crusade. Throughout history, the castle changed hands several times, including ownership by Napoleon Bonaparte, before finally becoming part of Belgium following the Belgian Revolution.
